What to Consider When Looking for a Plastic Surgeon

The most vitally important aspect of any surgical procedure is definitely the plastic surgeon. Cost and the beautiful results may have one glimmered, but safety, precision, and the experience of the physician will make or break all of those things.

Most patients will search for a plastic surgeon and immediately ask to see the before and after pictures of previous procedures performed. Though the portfolio is something that everyone is entitled to, it should not even be considered unless he or she is certified by the correct boards. There are numerous boards of medicine that surgeons can be certified by, but unless they are certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, all of those pieces of paper are futile. Legally, all doctors are allowed to perform all procedures (i.e., a podiatrist could operate on your eyes). Ensuring that your surgeon is certified in plastic surgery and has done a specific two to three years in plastic surgery training is imperative.

Don’t let any plastic surgeon intimidate you from finding the information that you need. The length and type of training that they have undergone is a matter of public record and can be obtained by contacting the AMA (American Medical Association).

Ensure that the doctor has what is called “hospital privileges”. Though the procedure may be performed at an office, the doctor should still be allowed to work at a hospital. This forces them to be reviewed and monitored by their fellow doctors.

Your doctor should be more than willing to provide you with patients who don’t mind giving a patient testimonial or two. If he or she has satisfied customers, then there is nothing to be afraid of.

We all hope that our doctors adhere to a strict code of ethics in all areas. From patient privacy to doing all that they can to put the patient first, ethics is the doctor’s honor code. A doctor who insists on performing multiple procedures at once or makes any part of the cosmetic surgery inconvenient for you should be looked upon warily.

Choosing a plastic surgeon may seem like an uphill battle at times, but there are hundreds of trustworthy, excellent plastic surgeons out there that can make any procedure seem like smooth sailing.
