What to Expect

Laser treatment is one of the most permanent and long-lasting hair removal solutions available. The laser beam uses heat energy to target and destroy each hair follicle, removing any hairs currently growing and preventing new hairs from growing back. The treatment is non-surgical and virtually painless; however, it is important that laser hair removal be performed by a medically trained professional, as concentrated laser energy can cause scarring or damage to the skin.

During the Procedure

During the procedure, you will be asked to wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser. One of our experienced physician assistants will gently press the laser device against your skin to “zap” away hair in the desired area. As the laser hits your skin, you may feel a pulsing sensation that many patients describe as feeling like warm pinpricks or a small rubber band being snapped against your skin. Treating a smaller area, such as the upper lip, will take only a few minutes, while larger areas, such as the back and bikini line, can take over an hour.

Recovery

Directly after the procedure, you may notice slight redness or swelling comparable to a sunburn. A cold compress can help reduce this, and the swelling should go away after a few hours.

After the Procedure

The speed at which you will see results after laser hair removal can vary depending on a number of factors, including the amount of hair being removed, the thickness of the hair, and the location of the hair on the body. In general, you can expect to see some results after the first treatment, although it may take several treatments to achieve the desired level of hair reduction.

Is Laser Hair Removal right for me?

Due to advances in laser technology, laser hair removal is a viable solution for all skin tones and hair types. People who experience razor burn, ingrown hairs, or irritation from shaving and waxing might consider laser hair removal to reduce these symptoms and any other irritations related to hair regrowth. Consult with your physician if any of the following apply to you, as these can affect the results of laser hair removal:

  • Especially light-colored hair (blonde, gray, white) that may be difficult for the laser to detect.
  • Tattoos on/around the area you wish to be treated

The Beauty Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

After achieving your desired level of hair removal, you can expect little to no regrowth for several months or even years. Laser hair removal will lessen the amount of hair in the treated area, and any regrowth that may happen will be thinner, lighter in color, and overall less noticeable.

Results

The interval between treatments should be discussed with your technician, as it varies for different procedures. Areas with rapid hair growth, such as the upper lip, can usually be treated 4 to 8 weeks after the initial treatment, while areas with slower hair growth, such as your back, should be treated every 12 to 16 weeks.

FAQs

Is laser hair removal safe?
Laser hair removal is a very safe procedure as long as it is performed by a trained professional. Any at-home laser treatments should be avoided because they have an increased risk of burning, scarring, and permanently damaging your skin.
How much laser hair removal will I need?
After the first treatment, patients typically can expect a 10 to 20 percent reduction in hair. Most larger areas will take 2 to 6 treatments for completed results. Results can last anywhere from several months to years. Any regrowth will be finer and less noticeable than before. Patients can get additional treatments to manage regrowth or shave/wax like normal after the treated area is fully healed (around 72 hours after the treatment).
Will results look natural?
Laser hair removal provides more natural and comfortable results compared to other hair removal methods. After the treatment is completed patients can expect immediate results without stubble, ingrown hairs, razor burn, or irritation bumps.
Will laser hair removal hurt?
Many patients say laser hair removal feels like warm pinpricks or snapping against the skin. Some areas of the body may be more sensitive than others, but the process is overall not painful.
Should I do anything to prepare for laser hair removal?
Patients should set up a consultation with their technician prior to treatment to discuss any preparational measures, as these can vary from person to person. It is recommended that you do not wax, pluck, bleach, or thread hair before or in between treatments. Avoid sun exposure before and after the treatment as well.
